Vision & Overview

Today in India as across the world education is seeking to provide the advanced technical skills and qualifications required in numerous growth sectors.
The Design and Build method streamlines and executes the entire Interior Design process from concept to delivery as a single entity. The Design and Build - Interiors program at Srishti Pune Center has defined several Pathways specific to Sector Skills Councils set up by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship of the Government of India.
Moving beyond conventional interior design programs, this course is planned closely with industry practitioners, and has been framed as per the National Skills Qualifications Framework levels 5, 6 and 7. Graduates from this program will be qualified to design interior spaces across a range of market requirements and execute their construction in the most efficient manner.
Students develop along Pathways specific to the Construction, Retail, Tourism & Hospitality and Media & Entertainment industries. As their design skills get more specialised, their design practice becomes more integrated and interdisciplinary allowing for the entrepreneur to emerge.

Vocational Practice

The Design-Build method is a systematic approach to a project in which the entire process of design and construction is streamlined and undertaken by a single entity. Through classroom and workshop learning, the program will explore new innovations that are changing the face of the design-build interiors. 3D-printing technology and prefabricated interiors will help learners to develop the ability to integrate technology, skill and technique into the practice.

Learning Approach

The program structure for the three-year technical program comprises of a number of learning modalities:
Theory: master classes, appreciation, lecture-demos, readings
Tutorials: mentoring in studios, can include projects
Practical: workshops, labs
Portfolio: building of a curated collection of work
Seminar: working towards the articulation of a position and a piece of work with industry participation and a curated theme- alternative to interim
Linkages:
Exposure- industry visits, trade shows, festivals, conferences,
Apprenticeships -working in a professionally mentored environment
Industry Experience - working in industry assignment in their environment
Independent Study: blended and/or distance/ e-learning, self study
Electives: General Knowledge and Education/ Language
Projects: industry/client based, diploma, fieldwork, site-specific projects

Course Structure

YEAR 1:

In YEAR 1, the focus is on a thorough understanding of basics of space, layouts and materials with the skills to observe record & represent accurately.
From the fundamentals of space making, design process and principal interior materials to inputs in technical conventions, software and basic interior services.
At the end of the year students would be able to work as entry level designers in a design build team interfacing between senior designers and contractors.

YEAR 2:

In YEAR 2, the focus is on the range of spatial requirements and interior services with the skills to coordinate and plan efficiently.
From inputs in the design and detailing of spaces and furniture with regard to user requirements to incorporating the design of spaces and services for the design build process.
At the end of the year students would be able to manage a design build team interfacing between clients, consultants and contractors.

YEAR 3:

In YEAR 3, the focus is on the implementation of ideas through the entire design build process with the skills to manage sites and resources professionally.
From inputs in systems, lighting, technology and special user requirements to a final capstone projects with all aspects of design build process.
At the end of the year students would be able to manage several design build teams, strategize and implement financial plans and represent themselves and their organization at every professional level.

    A webinar about the opportunities and challenges of designing and building spaces where people live, work and play. As the world is cross-pollinated by new ideas and technologies there is a need for competent professionals who are trained to deal with the realities of interior projects, who can take them seamlessly from conceptualization to execution.

    Design is often framed as problem solving or an extra element that make a space ‘aesthetic; while contractors, crafts-people and those who make are relegated to the background. What is evident is that we must use design as both process as well as outcome. Design must impact not only what we produce but the way we work as well.
